Ph.D. in Environmental Science

Programme Description

The program reflects a general public demand to understand and analyse mechanisms of adverse changes to the environment and find ways to mitigate them.

The key aim of the study is a detailed analysis of the current state of the environment, identification of principal pollutants, dynamics, transport processes, and transformation among the various environmental compartments.

An important aspect of the study is identification of biotic and abiotic processes, phenomena, species, and/or their groups (and their combinations) which may through the mediation of their state, behavior or a certain mechanism assist in early recognition of an unwilling disruption of a given environmental system (air, water, soil, biota, etc.).

During the study period, the graduate will acquire the necessary attitudes towards a creative independent and/or teamwork based on a general scientific method. The applicant is ready to creatively and at a high level of expertise solve complex and complicated problems of basic and applied science. He/she will acquire a deep experience in the lab and/or fieldwork and will be ready to plan scientific projects. He/she will have to use appropriate statistical/graphical techniques and publish the results obtained in renowned scientific journals. The study program is intended to prepare an individual to a carrier of a scientist acting in the field of applied or basic science or a highly skilled environmental management expert meeting the demanding needs of the private, non-profit or governmental sector.

The main focus of the Ph.D. program is a Ph.D. dissertation. To meet the criteria of the program the applicant has to expect to attend supportive courses and pass appropriate exams.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria

The entrance exam is a one-round in the form of an interview. Based on a written request submitted electronically together with the application but no later than by 19 May 2019, the Dean may permit the entrance examination to take place via information and communication technology, but only for serious and documented reasons such as health or study abroad.

During the entrance examination, the candidate must demonstrate the technical and linguistic skills to study the given program, along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The examination is graded with a maximum of 100 points, of which 30 points are awarded as a bonus for giving a more specific idea of the study content and planned dissertation work in the voluntary application appendix, including the dissertation topic, a brief annotation, the anticipated supervising department and the consent of a specific supervisor to supervise such doctoral project.

Conditions for admission

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by the successful completion of a Master's study program.

Verification method: entrance exam
Confirmation date (of entrance exam) from: 17.06.2019 until: 28.06.2019
Alternative date (of entrance exam) from: 08.07.2019 until: 19.07.2019

Rules governing exemption from entrance examination

The entrance exam may be waived based on a written request from the candidate, provided they have successfully applied for a STARS project in the given academic year. Such a request, along with documentation that the conditions have been met, must be submitted (but not electronically) by 19 May 2019.

Career Prospect

A Ph.D. graduate in Environmental Science is educated to solve problems of applied and basic environmental research in a creative manner and with high expertise. He/she is able to recognize processes leading to changes in the biophysical environment, to analyse the causes of these changes and assess the related effects. On the basis of this knowledge, the Ph.D. graduate is ready to provide methods aimed at improvements to the environment as well as to the social, health, and economic conditions of human society. The graduate is experienced in field and laboratory work, is able to formulate research hypotheses, perform conceptual work leading to project proposals, handle research data, use appropriate statistical and/or graphical methods and publish the results obtained.
