Ph.D. in Modeling of Chemical Properties of Nano- and Biostructures


Programme Description

The graduate study is organized by the department of physical and macromolecular chemistry in collaboration with the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences, covering computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, and molecular modelling. The study is focused on biomacromolecules (DNA and proteins) and complex molecular systems. The following projects can be studied:

  • Structure and dynamics of pairs and oligomers of DNA in the ground and excited electronic state.
  • Interaction of DNA with proteins and ligands.
  • Study of non-covalent interactions, particularly the regular and irregular hydrogen bonds.
  • Structural bioinformatics.
  • Stabilizing interactions in biomolecules - peptides and proteins and theoretical models of protein folding.
  • Theoretical study of chemical reactivity and catalysis.
  • Physical and chemical properties of molecular sieves.
  • Development of methods for the description of the static and dynamic properties of weakly bound systems.
  • Study of carbon nanostructures.
  • Interaction of biologically relevant ions with hydrated proteins.
  • Structure and dynamics of ions in solvents and at interfaces.
  • Physical and chemical processes on atmospheric aerosols.
  • Structure, dynamics, and function of RNA and DNA.

The concept of the study, which is based on the experience of the advisors, reflects modern trends in computational chemistry and in molecular modelling.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria

The entrance exam is a one-round in the form of an interview. Based on a written request submitted electronically together with the application but no later than by 19 May 2019, the Dean may permit the entrance examination to take place via information and communication technology, but only for serious and documented reasons such as health or study abroad.

During the entrance examination, the candidate must demonstrate the technical and linguistic skills to study the given program, along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The examination is graded with a maximum of 100 points.

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by the successful completion of a Master's study program.

Rules governing exemption from entrance examination

The entrance exam may be waived based on a written request from the candidate, provided they have successfully applied for a STARS project in the given academic year. Such a request, along with documentation that the conditions have been met, must be submitted (but not electronically) by 19 May 2019.

Career Prospect

This Ph.D. program is an interdisciplinary study combining physical chemistry, biochemistry, and material science with the modern tools of molecular modelling. Graduates are able to solve problems in the structural and dynamical aspects of complex systems using state-of-the-art tools of computational chemistry; they are also capable of writing reports and papers in scientific journals. Graduates have presented their results at international conferences, and have experience with the preparation of grant proposals. They will be useful in various areas of science, including materials engineering, pharmaceutical research, molecular biology, biotechnology and/or catalysis. Graduates will find positions in applied research both in the private sector and in academia.
