The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

After completing a college degree, a student may wish to pursue a graduate degree. The first level of such study is called a master. Students can earn this title after completing approximately two years of study when taking a full load of credits.

Situated at the confluence of Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, the Republic of Iceland is known to be a Nordic Island country. The education sector is handled by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The curriculum's and policies are thus outlined by the ministry.
