In line with our Public Value ethos, our PhD in Economics is a 4-year full-time programme designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to research current and important problems and phenomena facing our economy and society.

This PhD degree programme is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing. The centre is led by Cardiff University working closely with partner universities, Manchester and Sheffield, and University College London (UCL). The centre is also closely linked to the Compound Semiconductor Cluster, which is made up of a number of centres and companies working collaboratively to drive economic growth and to provide research and development in compound semiconductor technology and manufacturing.

Research is led by internationally renowned researchers running dynamic research programmes, with access to a range of state-of-the-art technology facilities. Our reputation is reflected in the tens of millions of pounds in research funding that we attract annually and by our consistent high level of publications in top international journals. We encourage high-level interdisciplinary collaborations, both nationally and internationally.

The Astronomy Instrumentation Group (AIG) has a reputation for not only developing world-leading enabling technology but in translating these developments into state-of-the-art instrument design to fulfil current scientific needs. This is evidenced by our considerable involvement in virtually all FIR space instruments, including the Herschel (Cardiff is PI institute for the SPIRE instrument) and Planck space telescopes. The AIG comprises 7 academic staff, 9 post-doctoral research associates and 6 PhD students, supported by highly skilled cleanroom, cryogenic and electronic technicians and computer engineers.

The professional doctorate is a part-time doctoral research degree. It is fully equivalent to the PhD, but substantially different from it in that it is strongly professionally oriented, focussing on ‘applied’ rather than ‘pure’ research.

Accounting and Finance is a research area within which you can focus your studies as part of our Business Studies PhD programme.

The Neuroscience division pursues a broad range of neurobiological research, spanning from the molecular to the behavioural levels.

The School specialises in a wide range of research areas and postgraduate students are fully integrated into these areas.

Molecular Biosciences focuses on the molecular mechanisms underpinning biological function. The Division has a broad strength that spans biochemistry, structural and synthetic biology, cell biology, molecular genetics and developmental biology. The groups within Molecular Biosciences focus on a variety of biological systems including Drosophila, yeast, Arabidopsis, tobacco, Dictyostelium, and mammalian cells, and have a growing strength in the use of post-genomic and systems approaches to solve biological problems.

The School has an exceptionally strong research culture with a strong reputation for the quality of the research produced and the growing number of research grants it is attracting. We are home to the Wales Governance Centre and to the European Governance, Identity and Public Policy Research Unit, attracting visiting scholars from all over Europe and the world.

The programme offers students the opportunity to undertake a sustained and independent research project, pursued at the highest level, as MPhil or Doctoral candidates. The attainment of a research degree provides an entry to a variety of career paths, including (as for many of our students) a career in academia.

The Organisms and Environment research division focuses on the biology of whole organisms and their roles and interactions in changing ecosystems, in infection and health and at the genetic level. Our aim is to understand the ecological, health and genetic consequences of environmental change on biological diversity. Our approach is to focus on processes and prediction, combining ecological, experimental and molecular approaches, in contrasting groups of organisms. All the major groups are studied, including animals, plants, bacteria, archaea, protozoa, filamentous fungi and yeast.
