Our program focuses on the processes of aging at the individual and societal levels. It examines how people change over the adult life course, the interrelationships between older people and social institutions, and the societal impact of the changing age composition of the population. We emphasize the dynamic interplay between the aging of individuals and their changing biomedical, social, and physical environments and multi-level interactions among psychological, physiological, genetic, social, and cultural domains.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Studies degree program is an interdisciplinary program within the College of Liberal Arts, Education, and Human Development that enables students of exceptional ability to undertake advanced study and original research in urban affairs and urban history, urban planning, and urban anthropology. The program's mission is to prepare students for careers in scholarly activity, applied research, and policy analysis.

The Ph.D. degree requires a student to reach a critical understanding of the basic scientific and engineering principles underlying their field of interest. In addition, the student must demonstrate the ability to conduct independently an intensive research project and document their results in the form of refereed publications, presentations, and a final thesis dissertation.
