The Doctoral Program in Chemical and Environmental Engineering was the first of those offered by the USC in the area of technical education, it obtained the Quality Mention from the first call of the Ministry in the 2003/04 academic year, maintaining it uninterruptedly throughout all courses in which it was in force, also obtaining the new Mention of Excellence label since the 2011/12 academic year, the year in which this new quality measure for doctoral programs was implemented.

The aim of the doctoral programmes of the CEE Department is to promote scholarly research leading to discovery, learning and innovation according to international standards of excellence, in the broader discipline of CEE, as well as in related multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields.

Our mission is to provide a state of the art and multidisciplinary learning environment at the undergraduate and the graduate level. We offer a variety of degrees, including B.S., Minor, M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees, and we conduct cutting edge research in three core areas: Air Pollution and Atmospheric Processes; Contaminant Fate and Resource Recovery and Hydrogeosciences and Water Resources Management.

In this research programme, students should implement updates of all aspects of environmental engineering including tools, techniques and regulations. Air quality control, water sanitation and its distribution, water treatment, waste pollutants sources and effects should also be covered. Candidates may draw attention to solid waste collection and transfer operations, hazardous waste remediation and assessment of environmental impacts.

Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at SMU has a long tradition of excellence in serving people and society. Today, we continue this tradition by developing the fundamental and applied technologies that have an impact on people’s lives.

The aim of the doctoral study program "Thermal Engineering and Fuels in Industry" is the scientific education of professionals who can creatively solve scientific research problems in the field of thermal engineering, energy, fuel chemistry, and ceramic materials, especially for high temperatures and material and energy utilization of waste.

This program provides an update of all the aspects of environmental engineering including tools, techniques, and regulations. It covers a wide range of topics such as air quality control, water sanitation and distribution, water treatment, as well as waste pollutants sources and effects. It also explores the collection and transfer operations for solid wastes, the remediation of hazardous wastes, and the assessment of environmental impacts.

The PhD program (according to the Italian Dottorato di Ricerca) is a postgraduate academic qualification. It represents the implementation of the 3rd cycle of education and training to research (according to the Bologna accord) in the Italian academic system and provides the abilities and competencies required for carrying out highly-qualified research in universities, public institutions and private companies.

PhD programme in Environment Engineering is designed to enable students become first-rate interdisciplinary researchers and acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed in both academic and non-academic career. Students of this programme have a possibility to acquire a double PhD degree, because of the contract with the University of Bologna (Italy).

The Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD (CENE PhD) degree program provides opportunities for students to gain expertise in a broad range of research areas that support state initiatives, closely tie to campus research thrusts, and align with federal funding sources such as NSF, DoE, DoD, USDA and NASA. Doctoral students work with faculty advisors mentors to develop personalized programs of study and make significant contributions to the Civil and Environmental Engineering body of knowledge through their research. The Doctoral Program in Environmental Science and Engineering at the UA aims to produce highly trained professionals who are qualified to carry out autonomous research in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering, and thus respond to the recruitment needs of the academic and business sectors and public institutions.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program aims at developing and strengthening students’ skills in identifying key issues related to environmental engineering, in formulating original research plans and methodologies, and in implementing those plans and methodologies to produce results that are useful for reducing environmental pollution and advancing environmental conservation and sustainable development.

As one of the fastest-growing fields in the U.S. and developing countries, new methods and technologies are emerging in civil and environmental engineering. Environmental engineering students use one of the world's largest wastewater treatment plants as a real-world laboratory to improve the water quality of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
