Introduction

McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, formerly UTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) is one of the six schools of UTHealth Houston which, is a component of the 14 institutions of The University of Texas System.

McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics is the only academic biomedical informatics program in Texas, the only free-standing school among 70 related programs in the nation, and one of the largest programs of its kind in the world.

Mission

The mission of the school is to collect, process, and convert data-ranging from molecules to populations-into actionable information, knowledge, and intelligence; to educate current and future leaders, innovators, and problem solvers across Texas, the nation, and the world; to disrupt, transform, and innovate to elicit biomedical discoveries, improve healthcare delivery, and aid in disease prevention by conducting outstanding basic and applied research and developing impactful information technology products and solutions.

Admissions

Admission Requirements for degree and non-degree programs at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston.

McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics utilizes a holistic review process for all applicants. This enables us to give careful consideration to all the credentials presented by the applicant. Applicants are reviewed only once each cycle term, be sure to submit your application with the strongest material.

Visa Requirements

McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston is a graduate school that awards postgraduate degrees. We do not offer undergraduate degrees.

A bachelor’s degree or higher is required to apply. If all education was completed outside the U.S., you must have a U.S. equivalency of a bachelor's degree or higher.

All applicants that have completed courses/degrees outside of the US are required to submit an official course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA calculation report by either World Education Services (WES ICAP) or Educational Credential Evaluators. The verified transcripts used for the evaluation need to be included with the education evaluation.

All international applicants must show proof of English language proficiency through one of the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam – Minimum score of 94. Follow these instructions to have official test scores sent to GradCAS. Use code: B886
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Minimum score of 7.0. Follow these instructions to have official test scores sent to GradCAS. A code is not required.

Applicants for whom the English proficiency exam is required and who do not meet the minimum requirement will not be forwarded for admissions committee review.

HIMSS Approved Education Partner

HIMSS Approved Education Partners (AEP) are educational programs that demonstrate that their educational development activities meet the rigorous standards of quality, as identified by HIMSS. AEPs are authorized to offer HIMSS-approved healthcare and health information technology education and training programs that prepare candidates for advanced knowledge in health IT and healthcare.

  • As a HIMSS AEP since 2016, our curriculum meets HIMSS's high educational standards.
  • Our education and training programs prepare candidates for advanced knowledge in health IT and healthcare.
  • Students receive the education and knowledge needed for both the CAHIMS and CPHIMS certifications.
  • Our Continuing Education courses also meet HIMSS’s industry-level standards for effective health training.

Project Management Institute

McWilliams SBMI is a PMI Authorized Training Partner. With this designation, you can be assured that your training has been vetted by the Project Management Institute to meet their exacting standards.

  • Two MSBMI courses, BMI 5328 – Systems Management and Project Management and BMI 7360 – Advanced Project Management, utilize PMI materials and can be used as educational credits towards the PMP or CAPM.
  • MSBMI also offers a continuing education Project Management course.
