The dissertation should include the latest developments in this field and present theories and practices found in scientific reality concerning the latest archaeological discoveries.

Research Degrees (MPhil/PhD) in History of Art and/or Archaeology undertaking a research degree is an intense and personally rewarding experience. A full-time doctoral student has three years to complete a full draft of their thesis and then a further one year for writing up (known as a 3+1 degree).

The Ph.D. graduate has in-depth theoretical knowledge in all principal fields of Egyptology and a detailed overview and an up-to-date understanding of the current state of research and associated problems. On the basis of the upheld Ph.D. dissertation, he/she is able to demonstrate exceptional quality in his/her specific specialization. The scholarly, language and analytical proficiency and skills of the graduate make him/her fully equipped for a professional scholarly and pedagogic pursuit on an international level. The Ph.D. graduate may be employed in many top-rated institutions centered on the study of antiquity, as well as on the level of effective top executives in institutions partaking in cultural, political, economic or trade relations between the Czech Republic and Egypt.

The aim of the joint doctoral study program “History and Archeology” of the University of Latvia and Daugavpils University is to ensure the succession of historical science, training of leading staff of scientific, higher education and cultural institutions who have the competence to raise and solve the most important problems of modern history, in a broader sense, it means participation in the formation of the intellectual elite, as well as the ability to influence the development of the direction and priorities of national historical science.

The degree will be structured according to the axes: one core with common nuclear courses and the other with elective courses. Regarding its duration, they may be four-monthly or intensive (from one week to one month in duration), having to meet in both cases a minimum amount of 30 clock hours. Each doctoral course will give one (1) credit for every ten (10) actual hours taught, with reading requirements and other corresponding tasks, and provided that there has been a favorable final evaluation by the teacher who taught the course.

The objective of this specialty program is to produce a new, creative type of talented scholar whose thoughts are sound and with the full development of morality, wisdom, physique, and aesthetics. Qualified graduates of this program are expected to be equipped with fine academic training, who has a wide range of theoretical basis and systematically deepening knowledge in the field of archaeology, who understands and is familiar with both the previous research achievements and frontier of professional knowledge.
