Strategic Planning

The Faculty of Applied Science is involved with a number of projects and planning activities intended to continuously improve the learning, research and professional practice experiences of those involved with the Faculty. These activities are complementary to UBC's Place and Promise, and thus align our long-term goals with those of the university and business communities.

Leadership

Applied Science is currently led by Dean James Olson, who is assisted by six Associated Dean’s. Each school, engineering department, engineering program and research centre within Applied Science has a Director or Head.

The thesis-based Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering is an advanced research-based degree. The program offers students an opportunity to work at the highest level of research, under the supervision of a faculty member. Students complete their candidacy examination within 18 months and complete their doctoral dissertation research within three to four years.
