Our History

Established by Edward Greene in 1967 under the name Edward Greene’s Tutorial Establishment, Greene’s is Oxford’s oldest tutorial college and has supported the education of approximately 15,000 students over the last forty-five years.

Having read Classics at Wadham College, Oxford, Edward Greene worked as a private tutor and also a teacher at Magdalen College School until he founded Greene’s.

From the beginning, Greene’s sought out the best tutors in Oxford to deliver high-quality tuition. Built on the tutorial system that has defined Oxford University learning, Greene’s has remained true to its roots of basing its courses on a programme of individual tuition to students of any age and background. Under its current principals, Matthew Uffindell and Christopher Upton, Greene’s has grown to have a register of approximately 160 tutors and 300 students.

Why Greene’s?

Choosing the right academic institution can be difficult. So why choose Greene’s?

Quality

We are regularly inspected by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI). ISI is a Government-approved inspectorate that carries out Educational Oversight inspections. Regular inspections and publicly available reports mean that we are monitored and subject to external scrutiny.

Longevity

We have been established for 50 years and Greene’s is the oldest college of its type in Oxford.

Individual

An academic programme at Greene’s is individual.

Flexible

All programmes at Greene’s are flexible and designed with the needs of each student in mind.

Skills

Inter-personal skills of critical thinking, teamwork, information analysis, effective oral & written communication, creativity and initiative are taught alongside all our academic programmes.

Tutors

Tutors are chosen carefully. They are highly qualified in their field; they are extensively interviewed with references taken and are required to attend our tutor-training programme. We choose tutors who know how to communicate effectively and who care about education.

Philosophy

Education using the tutorial method is core to our philosophy and methodology. It offers a number of advantages: a wide choice of options, the practical flexibility of time and place, the control of working pace, a focus on essential information with the opportunity of the depth of study. It encourages participation and builds the confidence to ask questions and broaden ideas, developing independence and initiative.
